Spice Personal Accident Insurance Policy
A special Personal Accident Insurance Scheme has been arranged by Harrison Beaumont Insurance Services and underwritten by Certain Underwriters at Lloyds for members of SPICE.
The following is a summary of the Terms, Conditions and Exclusions contained in a Master Policy of Insurance issued to SPICE, which may be inspected at the office of SPICE UK Ltd , 13 Thorpe Street, Old Trafford, Manchester, M16 9PR.
All new members of SPICE or those renewing their membership of SPICE.
If during any Period of Insurance an Insured Person sustains Bodily Injury which arises during a journey and independently of any other cause results in the Death, Dismemberment or Disablement of the Insured Person the Underwriters will pay the as per the following Schedule of Compensation
1 Death £15,000
2 Permanent Total Loss of
Sight of One or Both Eyes £15,000
3 Loss of One or More Limbs £15,000
4 Permanent Total Disablement £15,000
(other then loss of sight of one or both eyes or loss of limb(s) )
5 Permanent Total Loss of:-
i) Hearing on both Ears £6,000
ii) Hearing in one Ear £ 1,500
6 Loss by amputation or permanent total loss of us of:-
i) One thumb £ 3,000 £ 2,250
ii) Any other finger £ 1,500 £ 900
iii) Permanent total loss of use of shoulder or elbow
£ 3,750 £ 3,000
iv) Permanent total loss of wrist
£ 3,000 £ 2,250
v) One big toe £ 1,500 £ 1,500
vi) Any other toe £ 450 £ 450
vi) Permanent total loss of use of hip, knee or ankle

Benefit v to ix shall be reversed in the event of the Insured Person being left handed.
If compensation is payable in respect of one Insured Person under more than one form of permanent disability as a result of one accident the total payable shall not exceed 100% of the Sum Insured under item 4 of the Schedule of Compensation.
In the event of an Insured Person sustaining any permanent disability not noted above the compensation payable shall be calculated by assessing the degree of disability relative to this extension, but without reference to the Insured Person’s occupation.
If compensation is payable for loss of or loss of use of a whole member of the body then compensation for parts of that member cannot also be claimed.
7 Temporary Total Disablement £150 per week*
* The Benefit provided by Item 7 of the Schedule of Compensation shall be the Sum Insured or 65% of the Insured Person’s Gross Average Weekly Wage during the twelve months immediately prior to any claim, whichever is the less.
PROVIDED ALWAYS THAT: -
1 (a) Compensation shall not be payable under more than one of the items of the Schedule of Compensation in respect of the consequences of one Accident, and
(b) No weekly compensation shall become payable until the total amount thereof has been ascertained and agreed by Underwriters. If, nevertheless, payment be made for weekly compensation, the amount so paid shall be deducted from any lump sum becoming claimable in respect of the same Accident.
2 The total sum payable under this Insurance in respect of any one or more claims shall not exceed in all during the Period of Insurance the largest amount of benefit payable under any one of the items contained in the Schedule of Compensation or added to this Insurance by endorsement.

NOTICE TO THE INSURED PERSON
The cover referred to in this Certificate is subject to English Law. Any enquiry or complaint should be addressed in the first instance to the Issuing Agent. If the complaint concerns a claim please in the first instance write to the Managing Director of the Claims Administrators.
If the response is unsatisfactory the complaint may be referred to the Complaints Department at Lloyd’s and ultimately to the Insurance Ombudsman. The Claims Administrators will provide the full addresses of these organisations and the referral of a complaint to any of them will not affect your rights in law.
In this Insurance: -
1 “BODILY INJURY” means identifiable physical injury which: -
(a) is sustained by the Insured Person and
(b) is caused by an Accident during the Period of Insurance and
(c) solely and independently of any other cause, except illness directly resulting from, or medical or surgical treatment rendered necessary by such injury, occasions the death or disablement of the Insured Person within twelve months from the date of the Accident.
2 “ACCIDENT” means a sudden, unexpected, unusual, specific event, which occurs at an identifiable time and place, but shall also include exposure resulting from a mishap to a conveyance in which the Insured Person is travelling.
3 “LOSS OF LIMB” means permanent loss by physical separation of a hand at or above the wrist or of a foot at or above the ankle, and includes permanent total and irrecoverable loss of use of a hand, arm or leg.
4 “PERMANENT TOTAL DISABLEMENT” means disablement which entirely prevents the Insured Person from attending to any business or occupation whatsoever and which lasts twelve months and at the expiry of that period is beyond hope of improvement.
5 “TEMPORARY TOTAL DISABLEMENT” means disablement which temporarily and totally prevents the Insured Person from attending to the duties of his usual business or occupation and shall be payable during such disablement from the date on which the Insured Person first became disabled but not beyond 104 weeks and subject to a 7 day excess period each and every claim.
6 “JOURNEY” means any trip which is an authorised SPICE activity involving travel inside and/or outside the United Kingdom and shall start from the time of leaving home or normal place of business (whichever is the last) to travel directly to the scheduled venue/event and continue until arrival back at home or normal place of business (whichever is reached the sooner) by the most direct route.
7 Words in the masculine gender shall include the feminine.
This Insurance does not cover death or disablement: -
(a) Whilst the Insured Person is engaged or taking part in military, air force or naval service or operations (other than reserve or volunteer training).
(b) Whilst the Insured Person is engaged or taking part in aeronautics or aviation, other than as a passenger.
(c) Whilst the Insured is engaged or taking part in mountaineering or rock climbing normally involving ropes and/or guides.
(d) Whilst the Insured Person is riding or driving in any kind of race.
(e) Directly or indirectly caused or contributed to by the Insured Person’s intentional self-injury, suicide or attempted suicide, provoked assault, duelling or fighting (except in bona fide self-defence), or from the Insured Person’s own criminal act, or whilst engaged or taking part in civil commotions or riots of any kind.
(f) Consequent on war, invasion or civil war except whilst the Insured Person is travelling outside the British Isles and/or Ireland.
(g) Occasioned by or occurring while the Insured Person is in a state of insanity temporary or otherwise.
(h) Arising out of any condition caused by, prolonged by, or aggravated by any psychiatric, mental or nervous disorder of the Insured Person, including anxiety and/or depression.
(i) Arising out of or consequent upon or contributed to by radioactive contamination.
(j) Arising directly or indirectly out of, due to or aggravated by Intervertabral Disc Lesions and/or injury or defect of the spine and its associated structures, following lifting, twisting, turning or wrenching.
(k) Arising from physical or mental conditions or disabilities of a recurring or chronic nature from which an Insured Person suffered, and was known to suffer, prior to the inception of this Insurance or any renewal thereof.
(L) This Insurance does not cover any claim(s) in any way caused or contributed to by an act of terrorism involving the use or release or the threat thereof of any nuclear weapon or device or chemical or biological agent.
For the purpose of this exclusion an act of terrorism means an act, including but not limited to the use of force or violence and/or the threat thereof, of any person or group(s) of persons, whether acting alone or on behalf of or in connection with any organisation(s) or government(s), committed for political, religious, ideological or ethnic purposes or reasons including the intention to influence any government and/or to put the public, or any section of the public, in fear.
If the Underwriters allege that by reason of this exclusion any claim is not covered by this Insurance the burden of proving the contrary shall be upon the Assured.
1 Notice must be sent to the Underwriters as soon as practicable of any Accident to the Insured Person, and the Insured Person must as early as possible place himself under the care of a duly qualified medical practitioner. Notice must be sent to the Underwriters as soon as practicable in the event of death of the Insured Person, resulting or alleged to result from an Accident. In no case will the Underwriters be liable to pay compensation to the Insured Person or to his representatives unless the medical adviser or advisers appointed by the Underwriters for the purpose shall be allowed so often as may be deemed necessary to make an examination of the person of the Insured Person.
2 Any fraud, misstatement or concealment in relation to any matter affecting this Insurance or in connection with the making of any claim hereunder shall render this Insurance null and void and all claims shall be forfeited.
